For some people, it's easier to blindly judge than to deeply understand. Such traits either stem from a lack of knowledge or a lack of compassion.
School is a dog eat dog world for children. They're thrown together with hundreds of kids who each have different personalities and quirks. Eventually a norm is established and not fitting into that norm can cause a lot of friction. Take Cokey Michaels for example.
While every other boy at his age is either playing sports or in groups digging up bugs, he's isolated and left to himself. He twitches for seemingly no reason and explodes at the slightest disturbance. It's challenging for him to socialize with others when they think he's being weird. These challenges have caused Cokey to jump from school to school and his mother hopes that Misfit Elementary will be his final one.
No one expected his arrival to cause such a commotion.
On his first day, Cokey is immediately targeted by other students for his unusual behavior. They despise his skittish fits and taunt him as much as they can to force him to leave their school.
But someone knows what's really happening to Cokey and their determined to protect him.
The Bully Brigade rally to Cokey's aid and aims to convince everyone that Cokey deserves to be treated fairly. But that's a lot harder than it should be.
The Bully Brigade: There's Something about Cokey Michaels deftly tackles topics of bullying, special needs, and the biases in our society. Through Cokey's story, we are inspired to be courageous in our efforts to help those who are misunderstood.
