The Desert Music was co-commissioned by the West German Radio, Cologne and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The world premiere was in Cologne March 17, 1984 and the American premiere was at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Opera House October 25, 26 & 27, 1984 as part of the 1984 Next Wave Festival.
Recorded October 29 and 30, 1984, at RCA Studio A, New York City.
