Reedsman-vocalist Paul VornHagen’s second release on this label includes three original charts and eight jazz standards, each showcasing his versatility. He plays a sensuous flute on “No Moon at All” and “Don’t Go to Strangers,” then lays down gutsy baritone riffs on the title cut, prompted by his first visit to France. In between, VornHagen moves from tenor to soprano to alto to work tunes such as Horace Silver’s “Sister Sadie,” Monk’s “Hackensack” and Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia.” VornHagen’s vocals on “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “Blame It on My Youth” are as smooth as silk.
