The Boyfriends was a small group drawn from the ranks of the better-known Savoy Hotel Orpheans, both directed by pianist Carroll Gibbons. They began recording in December 1931, and this compilation spans the period from mid-1932 to mid-1934. Most of their recordings were instrumental, but exceptionally the November 1932 session (which included the American violinist Matt Malneck) had vocals by Cecile Petrie. In late October 1933 The Boyfriends were joined by composer and pianist John Green, who recorded eighteen numbers with the group, fourteen of which are included. Of particular interest are the recordings of "On the Air" and "Not Bad", labelled as Two Friends in Harmony, which the two pianists used as an opportunity to trade friendly insults. Four of the tracks are selections of numbers from then current shows or films, one of which is a piano solo by Carroll. Beautifully remastered, this should appeal to both devotees of British dance bands and light music.
