In the Village of Hope
"In the Village of Hope"—an elegant, restless, and relentlessly virtuosic harp solo—slowly progresses through a series of diatonic harmonic “fields,” often shifting dramatically from one to the next. Each field is brought to life by unabashedly virtuosic contrapuntal lines that sketch out and develop fragmentary recurring motives. Describing the work, the composer writes, “With a sound reminiscent of wind chimes, it yields fields of harmonic stasis, that mysterious circumstance of individual notes diverging and merging to form a delicate fabric of sound.”
"In the Village of Hope" (2013, New York City) was commissioned by Tasha Smith Godínez, to whom it is dedicated,
with support from the American Harp Society, the San Diego Harp Society, and Eric Smigel.
