This Album Received the 2004 Kweevak.com "CD OF THE YEAR AWARD" from their Top 40. Soul fused with pop and r&b, and a little bit a hip-hop. Great Lyrics, great music.
Stephanie St. James is currently playing the role of Squeak in Oprah Winfrey Presents "The Color Purple" Musical's First National Tour.
St. James as many call her has been singing and performing since she could talk. Born to immigrant parents her Russian Jewish mother and her Guyanese father both met in Israel in line at the school cafeteria in Jerusalem. Her family came to America with her Jerusalem born older brother and her grandmother a holocaust survivor in the late sixties. Hebrew being the language spoken in the home, and being an interracial couple with two mixed children in the South you can say was the beginnings of the uniqueness of St. James. An independent recording artist based in Los Angeles, St. James is not your common soul artist. With lyrically driven music that spans the genres of soul, rock, and pop she is an artist that is not so easily categorized in today's music scene. St. James is an artist that radiates an energy that many of her music listeners and those who have met and many who have even graced the stage with her call Mysterious, and this energy comes blasting through your speakers to bring you a vibe and an experience that is quite unique, like the artist herself. With her diverse family background and history and coming from the Bay Area music scene, where she was inspired by so many incredible artists, these influences have been profound and have helped to evolve an artist that is versatile in spirit, lyric, melody, and perspective. An Endometriosis survivor and advocate for the disease, she truly represents what it means to be a survivor in the industry working with a very debilitating disease.
After leaving the Bay Area to pursue a career in acting, singing, and dancing in New York, just a year into her arrival in the big city she booked her first major gig. Since performing in the European Tour of "Fame - The Musical", St. Jamesâ„¢ has been seen across the globe as Rusty in the First National Tour of "Footloose", Frenchy in McCoy/Rigby Entertainment's "Grease", Lola the Pinkette in Garry Marshall's "Happy Day's Musical", Celia (understudy) in the World Premiere of "Dorian" at the Denver Center, Sybil Vane in Dorian - Rock and Roll Forever (originated the role on the cast recording), Evie in "The Outsiders" directed by Arthur Seidelman, Felicia in Barry Gordy's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" at Center Theater Group (workshop), Squirt in "Finding Nemo - The Musical" workshop, Ronnette in "Little Shop of Horrors" to name just a few. She received a Best Supporting Actress Nomination in the Toronto Independent Film Festival - Planet Indie for her role of Maravillas in the film "Traces".
