Hymns of the Mohawk Elders is a collection of hymns that were written by Mohawk speakers in the Akwesasne, NY community in the early days of their church history. They were an important part of a season of change that came to the Mohawk people.
This album was inspired by memories of Andrew C. Maracle Sr. sharing these songs with his family. The Mohawk language was important to him and one of the ways of sharing his language was through these songs. These hymns were often sung in the church that Andrew and his wife, Lillian pastored in the Mohawk speaking community of Akwesasne, NY. It was a rich part of Maracle family heritage and is one of the beautiful things that we enjoy so much when we are together. As a family, we are often called upon to sing these songs on special occasions and at family gatherings.
The melodies are warm and inviting, and make you want to sing along. Each song is written out with English translation for singing as well as for understanding. Enjoy the ancient sounds of our language as we worship our Creator.
