About The Recordings: While a few of the selections in the "Sondheim Sings" series were recorded under less than optimal conditions, most of Mr. Sondheim's demos were recorded at the home of John Barry Ryan on reel to reel tape at 15 ips in full track mono. Sondheim kept 7.5 ips copies of these originals in his study, and the original tapes were tucked away and un-played until they were discovered after a fire at his Turtle Bay home in 1995. Our sonic goal is to give the listener as clean and accurate a digital copy of these historic recordings as possible, while preserving their original character and sound quality. Therefore, only minimal processing was effected in order to present the recordings in "Sondheim Sings" to their best advantage.
Apportioned proceeds from the "Sondheim Sings" series will be donated to Young Playwrights Inc., founded in 1981 by Mr. Sondheim for the support and development of young playwrights under the age of 18.
Note:
Collection includes songs that are slightly different from their final stage versions as well as songs that were cut from the stage productions. Booklet reprints all the lyrics as sung here, with notations for changes made. Includes historic photos and detailed notes by Sondheim archivist Peter E. Jones.
