Carnatic Saxophone Classics is a double disc compilation of popular South Indian Classical pieces spanning 500 years of Carnatic composers. The album’s featured artist, Dr. Sumanth Swaminathan, displays a unique instrumental style that is colored by his two gurus: saxophone vidwan, Padmashree Dr. Kadri Gopalnath and vocal vidwan Sri T. N. Bala. Supporting artists Srikant Venkatraman (Violin) and Vijay Ganesh (Mridangam) provide a world class accompaniment reflective of their decorated musical careers.
The album is presented in the format of a South Indian kutcheri, replete with tonal and rhythmic improvisation on a variety of ragas. The signature piece, split into two tracks entitled “Raga Alapana - Kapi” and “Intha Sowkhyamani”, displays most of the major improvisational forms in carnatic music (including alapana, neraval, and swara).
