As the sirens wailed and the flames of burning buildings turned the black night into blood red, the sound of Vera Lynn reaching out across the airwaves became the personification of a nation's spirit in adversity. The imagery of lyrics such as "Bluebirds over the white Cliffs of Dover" with its twin symbols of freedom and invincibility helped a war-weary public hang on to the dream of a better tomorrow.
