Liner notes: My musical sense began staring into the jukebox in my dad's pool hall. I could feel the music as I leaned against the glittering machine and watched the needle bounce on the vinyl singles. That legacy of pop music has always stayed with me and this album asks the questions, What is a jazz standard? Why is one song accepted and not others? What happens when you ask a song from the the 1980's and 90's the same questions as a song from the 1920's?' We were fascinated by this process, and we were delighted to put songs like Benny Golson's classic 'Whisper not' side by side with the Talking Heads' 'Heaven'. We think it starts a new kind of conversation. We hope you enjoy being part of it.
