I woke this morning to the sad news of Christie McVie's passing. Suffice it to say, it has been a melancholy day.
I am flooded with memories of Fleetwood Mac from the first time I heard Rumours to a recent conversation I had with a dear friend about Bob Marley and the Wailers, the warmup band for their 1980 European tour. More than just memories though, it is the indelible mark her songs have had on me that moves my soul.
Christie's skill as a songwriter in concert with the musical talents of her fellow bandmates, put Fleetwood Mac as an outlier in the world of pop stardom: incredibly deep and quite refined. Who else could put the pain of love and adulthood in such a perfect chorus? As Dan Flynn wrote:
