There are a lot of high points on Set to Soar. Rigg and Bruneau drop cool tunes everywhere they go. The minor key rockabilly jam “A Girl Like You” opens the album in fine style with an uptempo groove and tasty surf-tinged guitar work. “The Little Things” is vibe-filled Seattle-influenced guitar pop while “Ready Now” shows itself to be a love song put over a gospel feel. The styles keep shifting but the creative feel glues everything together and makes this set a good full-length listen. Styles appearing include rockabilly, gospel, and wah-laced 60s rock. The songs are hooky and memorable, no matter the vibe, and fans of tight, entertaining songwriters will find this right on target. Robot Raven has written over sixty songs as a unit and its blend of song chops, classic DNA, and unique arrangements make checking out the back catalog seem like a tremendous idea. Their fourth album, Set to Soar, however, is a great place to start.
