"Vaguely Starshaped is the penultimate Losing Blueprint band. They are catchy, they are smart, and they love to rock. Although The Lamplight EP is only four songs long, it gives you a nice idea of what to expect from this Rhode Island indie rock outfit. They are no strangers to complex arrangements and angular guitars, but their style is more overtly melodic than most math-rock bands. Take "Pretty Early," a particularly catchy number that also turned up on the band's split 7" with thebrotherkite. Its noisiness and angularity is quite noticeable, but it's the infectious chorus that keeps listeners coming back. It is the best song here (a full album of comparable tunes would be quite something), but that isn't to say the other three tracks are throwaways. "When the Sadness Breaks" is a murky, noiresque start/stop tune that almost sounds like some of Ozma's work - very tuneful and dramatic. The other two songs, "Everyday Superhuman" and "Aspartame," are also quite solid, though don't amount to anything especially spectacular. When all is said and done, The Lamplight EP is a fine release from a band that's only going to get better - and I'll be listening."
