Pierre Attaingnant was a music publisher of the 16th century whose output included a set of 7 (now 6) books of harpsichord music infamously riddled with errors. The first 30 tracks are selections from these books, heavily edited & corrected by Glen Wilson; these are mostly transcriptions/arrangements of other composers’ works, though not all their names are now known. Tracks 31-38 are a selection of other 16th-century French keyboard pieces selected by Glen Wilson as a representative sample of the music of the period. (More on these latter pieces at www.naxos.com/notes/572999.htm).
Numbers after titles (i.e., Gaillarde 13) refer to H. M. Brown’s “Instrumental Music Printed Before 1600”
The harpsichord used is described as “Anonymous long-scaled iron-strung Italian harpsichord (A = 390Hz) from a private collection. Modified 1/6-comma temperament.”
