Haveli Sangeet = Temple Music Of The Vaishnavas
Pandit Jasraj's exquisite performances on this recording introduce us to the tradition of temple singing called Haveli Sangeet. The tradition derives from one of Northern India's principal paths of Krishna Bhakti, or devotion to Krishna (Lord Vishnu).
The path known as Pushti Marg (Way of Grace) was founded by the poet-singer Vallbhacharya (1479 - 1531) who drew inspiration from various ancient classical texts to build up a cult around Krishna, the flute playing God of Vrindavan. The music is used to heighten spiritual awareness among listeners who are required to join in the chorus.
