The "Navajo Vocables for Piano" is based on transcriptions of vocals sung in chants; Nos. 1-4 & 9-12 are based on Navajo Corn-Grinding songs; Nos. 5-8 are based on Navajo Sqauw Dance Songs.
The "Navajo Preludes for Piano" are based on the melodies of three Navajo Squaw Dance Songs, adding harmony to the melodies.
