Titchfield Abbey was founded in 1232 by Peter des Roches, bishop of Winchester. It was a Premonstratensian monastery which functioned effectively until it was dissolved in 1537. It was almost immediately converted into a substantial country house for Sir Thomas Wriothesley, later 1st earl of Southampton.
