Legacy Of The Horses...Spring 1865 is the sequel to the earlier novel Because Of The Horses. It continues the story of three rural East Tennessee families-the Marshes, the Pattons and the Johnsons. Their saga takes place against the backdrop of a still divided nation exhausted from years of Civil War upheaval. By this time, the Confederates have relinquished their hold on East Tennessee and the War is beginning to wind down there. A minimal sense of normalcy has returned, but the bitter split in allegiance to either the Union or the Confederacy remains divisive and explosive within families and between neighbors. The families' interactions with each other, former slaves, farmhands, and soldiers entangle you in their personal tragedies and reckonings. Their experiences underscore the theme of both books of how it felt to be a small part of society and events set apart, but still desperately tied to the tragedy of the Civil War. As a companion book Legacy Of The Horses...Spring 1865 strives to resolve the mysteries and questions begging to be answered at the end of Because Of The Horses. At the same time however, the book is a story in itself and can be enjoyed as a stand alone read.
