3This is an English translation of the Punjabi epic poem Heer Waris Shah. The poem has remained popular among Punjabis for almost three centuries. The author believes that non-Punjabis would also enjoy this work, because of its many merits. It is a heart wrenching romantic tragedy, a faithful portrayal of an alien culture, and an allegorical work with potent religious meaning. It should also find acceptance among those Punjabis, and their children, who cannot read the original, Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi, version.
