Why was the birth of a poor 'carpenter' in the first century AD attended by the Persian Magi: the Persian king-makers? Why was Jesus later known as the 'King of the Jews'?

There is a great deal of evidence within the New Testament that demonstrates that Jesus was actually of royal blood. But if this is so, then from which royal family was he descended?
