Tomoe Gozen, Samurai General, "The She who Defines Bravery"

From farm girl to Samurai General who led an army to take back Japan for her people.

"Tomoe" is based on the life of Tomoe Gozen, who was raised in peaceful farming village outside of Kyoto. However, the warring factions for the rule of Japan had been in the middle of the most prolonged carnage of the century, 20 years in, and Tomoe stood in place for her brother when soldiers came to her village to take teen boys for the army. We find that she's secretly had some training (no spoilers here) before arriving at grunt camp, yet even so, she excelled so far beyond her classmates that she was picked for samurai training, which was usually reserved for the sons of samurai, and not foot soldier recruits. She flourished, and went headfirst to battle, always first in to scout, and volunteering for any and all challenges first. She was quickly noticed for both her courage and skill, and rapidly promoted up through the ranks, to general in just a few short years.

This is her life story, the triumph of courage over stereotypes, and preserving friends and family against mindless procession of war. Of love and friendships, loyalty and rugged individualism.

She also was the last loyal general to Commander Yoshinaka, all the way to the final battle of Awazu, in which one side was demolished, and the other barely survived, but took reign of Japan for the next 500 years.
