1God was with man in the beginning until our first parents, Adam and Eve, sinned. Their sin created a gap between God and man. Jesus came to this world to bridge that gap; but Jesus returned to heaven. It is more than right doctrines and right behavior that keeps the gap bridged between God and man. It is now the work of the Holy Spirit to continue to be God with man as Jesus performs His great work as our High Priest and our Advocate with the Father.When the Father sent the Spirit to be with man after His Son returned to the heavenly sanctuary, the Spirit brought gifts that enabled man to spread the gospel to all parts of the world. Some day those gifts will be restored to the church as the final warning of the third angel's message combines with the gospel to bring every person to a decision as to whom he or she will worship-either man and his law, or God and His law. The Lord said that He would give us the Holy Spirit-the third Person of the Godhead-to be our Comforter and our spiritual teacher.Great deception will be in the earth in the final conflict between good and evil, and our only hope of avoiding deception will be to have the indwelling Spirit of God. We must have the Spirit of God living in us or risk embracing one of the many false winds of doctrine blowing in the church.Man has failed in closing the work of taking the gospel to the world. Soon, "God [the Spirit] will use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is taking the reins in His own hands. The workers will be surprised by the simple means that He will use to bring about and perfect His work of righteousness." Evangelism, p. 118.
