LeRoy is a happy and carefree little locust until the day Momma explains to him that he is different from other locust. He loses his shell more often than they do, which means he's not "normal." From that moment, LeRoy hides the idea in his heart that people around him may find him odd. As LeRoy gets older, he makes new friends. Each shows him how to apply God's word to everyday life.

LeRoy, just like the author of this book, had to learn what God's Word says about his specific situation and not waver from the truth. It's very important that we choose our words carefully and be mindful of the words we allow to captivate our attention. We should fix our mind on words that produce life, not death. According to Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." All other thoughts or imaginations need to go. Just like LeRoy learns, we must actively apply 2 Corinthians 10:5, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." If it doesn't line up with God's word, we must choose to cast it out. Otherwise, we may cause ourselves to be The Lonely Locust.
