6This book chronicles the real life achievements and struggles of a young man who witnesses in real time the struggles and transformation of the city he loves. Detroit Michigan. Detroit underwent a transformation in the 60's and 70's. Once known as the automobile manufacturing capital of the world, it is now a city in decline. It has endured mass flight by most of its white residents due in large part by the decline in auto sales, but also the court ordered decision regarding the busing of school students in the mid-seventies. This book tells the story of one man's journey from the beginning of busing in Detroit to his trail blazing assent in the mostly white suburban school districts. His inroads into the all-white supervision and instructional ranks have opened doors for his contemporaries. This book tells the story of his 50 year commitment to the safe transportation of school students in the Detroit area. Archie Denard was born in Birmingham, Alabama but raised in his adopted city of Detroit, Michigan. He was educated in the Detroit Public Schools system, graduating from Southeastern High School. He could not attend college, but gained a healthy respect for education and encouraged his five daughters to further their educations. Archie is an avid bowler and is considered a pioneer in the sport in the Afro-American community. His meteoric rise through the transportation system in Detroit is the basis for this work and the foundation for the many successes he has achieved in the industry.
