Why does Jenny Black keep having near death experiences?
Some people who return from the edge of death report strange things. A life review, floating through a tunnel filled with a golden light, dead relatives waiting in a loving welcome, an ecstatic feeling of oneness with the universe. A near death experience is rare and life-changing. Nobody has ever had more than one. Until now.
Jenny Black has had 22 in the last year, spontaneously and without almost dying. At first, Jenny thinks it's pretty cool. She's a lifelong seeker and this, finally, is her payoff. But no one believes Jenny. And they just keep coming, with no warning. Near death on repeat mode is becoming less fascinating and more terrifying.
Luckily, her childhood friend Loretta works at a university. Loretta has plenty of troubles of her own but when Jenny shows up, desperate for someone to help her get her life back on track, Loretta puts her own worries aside and sets out on a quest across departments-religion, anthropology, neuroscience, biology, philosophy, psychiatry, and more-to learn about near death experiences and to help Jenny figure out what to do.
But then Jenny starts having trouble getting back through the tunnel and her sense of 'self' erodes a little more each time. Can Loretta solve the mystery of near death experiences before Jenny gets stuck on the other side?
A metaphysical mystery, "The 31 Near Death Experiences of Jenny Black" uses one woman's journey to understand near death experiences to explore the concept of the 'self' and the wide-ranging impact of how humans frame and tell that story.
