Due to the geography, weather and terrain, teams of sled dogs were in high demand for personal transportation and to haul supplies.The main character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story begins with Buck's life in California, where he is stolen from domestic life and forced into service as a sled dog in Alaska. Buck is compelled to abandon his domestication to survive against mother nature, feral dogs, and vicious humans.Before writing the story, Jack London spend almost a year in the Yukon gathering material for the book. Originally the story was serialized for newspaper consumption but was later adapted for publication as a book. The popularity of the book contributed to its early adaptation to film in 1923. The Call of the Wild has since had numerous cinematic adaptations.
