Buck is compelled to abandon his domestication to survive against mother nature, feral dogs, and vicious humans.Before writing the story, Jack London spend almost a year in the Yukon gathering material for the book. Originally the story was serialized for newspaper consumption but was later adapted for publication as a book. The popularity of the book contributed to its early adaptation to film in 1923. The Call of the Wild has since had numerous cinematic adaptations.
