Claude Monet was a leading figure of the nineteenth century Impressionist movement, which takes its name from his painting, Impression, Sunrise (1872). Among other subjects, Monet was known for his landscapes of Paris and Normandy and his beautiful studies of flowers, as well as approximately 250 incredible oil paintings of water-lilies. The Water-Lily Pond is a depiction of Monet's own water garden near his property in Giverny. In 1899, enchanted by the landscape and passionate about maintaining its beauty, Monet began series of 17 paintings, each featuring the wooden bridge in Japanese style over the pond. He meticulously recorded how the appearance of the scene changed as the light shifted throughout the day, calmly conjuring up this charming spot in his garden, his paint laid on in short brushstrokes, as was his habit in his later years.
