The year is 1909. Edward VII is on the throne, and life upstairs in Leatherby Manor is one of opulence and wealth-a stark contrast to working-class life in the North of England at the time. Below stairs, the long-serving housekeeper and butler run a tight ship, ensuring their employers' every need is catered for. 

The newest addition to the staff is sixteen-year-old Martha Thomson, who takes on the position of housemaid alongside Rosie and Nell, two established members of the domestic household. Each of the maids has a story to tell, their lives touched by romance and tragedy.
