2Alec Waugh's autobiographical novel was a sensation when published for exposing the culture of bullying, laziness and homosexual coercion present in England's public schools.

Although its revelations are couched in mild, even casual language, Waugh's novel lifts the veil on a doggedly traditional culture of English education. Set in the years prior to World War I, the Loom of Youth narrates the experiences of public school life. The plot is simply the depiction of day-to-day events, trials and struggles, from the ingrained customs of fagging and cricket to the physical and mental abuse frequently meted out by certain boys.
