« Cede lugar a mi secreto amor!

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

2024: YEAR OF CORTÁZAR

A work of rare beauty, written in a classical style. A twist on the myth of Minotaur in the form of a dramatic poem.

"Make way for my secret love! Come, brother, come, lover to the end! Arise from the depths that I never dared save, arise from the abyss that my love has demolished! Emerge holding the thread that this foolish boy bears to you!"

The Kings (1949), the first book published by Cortázar under his own name, is a dramatic poem that offers a novel approach to the story of the Minotaur. In his retelling, Ariadne is in love not with Theseus but with the monster who lives at the center of the labyrinth. Cognizant of the closed and fateful structure of Greek myths, Cortázar reworks the story while keeping its classic ending: despite his lover's intentions, the Minotaur chooses to die at the hands of Theseus. A work of rare beauty, written in a classical style that stands apart from the rest of Cortázar's work, The Kings has the enormous merit of respecting tradition even as it transgresses it.
