9Composed for the nine hundreth anniversary of Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England (the same cathedral that ten years previously commissioned Leonard Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms'), William Albright's 'Chichester Mass' was composed in 1974 and premiered in Chichester in 1975. A 'missa brevis', that is with no Credo, the setting for choir SSAATTBB, stands alongside the 'Chichester Psalms' and Britten's 'Rejoice in the Lamb' as one of the great classic works commissioned by Walter Hussey for the cathedral. It's clouds of chromatic and modal chords make it an evocative meditation for choir.
