This verse is the key to the presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ in Mark's Gospel. In the chapters of this fast-paced book, Jesus is not presented as Prophet, Priest or King, but as servant, the Servant of His Father. In order for Jesus to fulfill these other exalted roles, it required Him to humble Himself, to take on the form of servant, to act in absolute obedience, even to death on the cross.
Not only was Jesus qualified to serve as He walked on earth, but He is qualified to save us as no other individual has been or ever will be. Only the perfect One, the sinless God-Man, could bridge the gap of sin between us and a holy God. He came down from the indescribable glory of heaven where He was continually worshipped, to become man, to be rejected and despised for you and for me.
We desire the love, serenity, wisdom, gentleness, and righteousness of Jesus. But how deeply do we desire the life of service presented in this gospel? Are we willing to serve all people in Jesus' name and for His glory?
As we focus on the life and ministry of Jesus, let us absorb His character into our own! Give your whole life to Jesus to do with as He will. Jesus will change your life!
