5My inspiration for writing this book came to me at a time in my life whereas it would have been the last thing on most people's minds.
I was in captivity at a federal U.S. Penitentiary, serving four life sentences plus 20 years, For being the leader and operator of an illegal criminal enterprise. Also known as (R.I.C.O.) Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization.
What this translates to is that I was indicted and charged with running a multi-million dollar-a-week business! During the trial, my operation was compared to that of a major corporation. A small consolation after being found guilty on all counts.
Once inside, I observed many young men of color that were convicted on drug charges and the likes. What I also witnessed, although most of these guys understood the drug business, yet had difficulties in understanding "Business 101." I thought back on my experience with legal business and the illegal. Besides the obvious, there was really nothing different between the two. Except, of course, the translations!
Many of the younger men were fueled by that entrepreneurial spirit. They understood the mechanics of business but not the formal language! As many of these men transitioned from illegal business to legit, their businesses failed simply because they didn't understand "letter of credit" vs a front.
I wrote this book in order to bridge the gap between that language barrier, and to assure them that the principles are the same... Giving them the confidence to continue to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
Since the writing of this book, I have been granted Clemency by President Barack Obama. Giving me the opportunity to practice what I teach...
