Laura had one human friend. A boy who played mud pies with her at the back of her mother's shop in Glenbloom, Australia. His fleeting visits were full of love and mud pies. But unexpectedly, he stopped coming to the store. Horses were her best friends; their brains don't comprehend deception or desertion.Second: The divorce of her parents when she was twelve. Followed by her mother's untimely death. Then her father. More loneliness, more sorrow. And third, the toxic relationship she had with a French man. They met in Europe at the height of her thriving modelling career. Initially, it was glorious. But the monster was disguised as everything she wanted. He then deceived her out of her wealth, health, and beauty. He carried her lifeless body into a Paris hospital like you would carry the rubbish out to the trash can. He then vanished. We meet Laura in 1985, on her return home to Glenbloom.About the AuthorI originally wrote this story (and several others) on an old typewriter in the 1980s whilst living on a farm in Australia. I have a love of Andalusian horses and had several on the farm. I was involved in promoting the breed by performing traditional Spanish quadrille displays in a team of eight. The elegance of the Spanish horses, costumes, and music played a part in my inspiration for this story. All my stories remained in a box in my closet for some thirty years. As life got busier, they stayed in the closet. It wasn't until I moved house in 2019 that I found the box. I had forgotten about them. Some of the ink had faded, but they are still legible. After some plot twists and a lot of editing, I have chosen this story to release to the world.I can't explain what gave me the urge to write stories, other than to say the ideas just came to me, and I couldn't wait to type it all down on a borrowed typewriter. Let me tell you about that typewriter. When I say old, it was the type with a ribbon. Once I reached the ribbon's end, I had to spin the ribbon around with my finger to get back to the beginning of the roll. It had a bell that sounded when I got to the end of a line. I also had some white correction papers for any errors. There was no internet, no word processor, no mobile phones and no computer. I was in my early twenties when I originally wrote this story. I am now in my fifties.I hope you have as much pleasure in my fictional world of Love and Mud Pies as I did writing it. I hope the characters take you back to 1985 and on a magical journey of splendour, horses, love and mud pies. Please leave me a comment at janetsmithauthor.com or authorjanetsmith@gmail.comI would love to know your thoughts on my work.
