Great Depression and the Dust Bowl have caused thousands to lose their jobs, their homes, and their land. Thousands of people are forced to endure hardships, but none more than nine-year-old Sara Jane Evans. Orphaned and homeless after a tragic accident burns down her home, Sara Jane is forced to leave the only home she has ever known and travel to places she has never been with nothing but her rucksack, her beloved dog Buddy, and her faith in God.
